This app only does one thing

This article at NiemanLab (a great source for learning about cool media apps) describes an election app created by the Boston Globe. You might not have cared about the Iowa caucuses, but you can appreciate how cool this was for people who did care.

Two important components are the automatic refresh — every 15 seconds (like our shoutbox app!) — and the app’s ability to pull in data from the AP.

Think about this for a moment. The Associated Press transmits updated results frequently during any election. So if your app can read those results, it can take the numbers out and then write them onto a Web page. The page does not have to refresh because you can make the timer with JavaScript and rewrite the numbers (or in this case, the graphs) with jQuery.
